Algeria will begin supplying Lebanon with fuel for its power plants – per a statement on Sunday by the Algerian state radio, Radio Algeria.

Yesterday, the Lebanese electricity company, Électricité du Liban (EDL), announced that the last remaining power generation unit on the national grid has completely shut down, resulting in a nationwide blackout.

The Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated: "President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has ordered an immediate supply of fuel to Lebanon to operate power generation stations and restore electricity in the country."

It added that Prime Minister Aymen Benabderrahmane informed Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati of President Tebboune’s decision to "stand by our brother Lebanon in these challenging times."

In the statement by EDL, it said that “under the current conditions, we inform you that as of this afternoon, Saturday, August 17, 2024, the last power generation unit at the Zahrani plant has completely ceased operations.”

The power outage in Lebanon is attributed to the "complete depletion of the plant's fuel reserves," which has led to a total disruption of electricity supply across Lebanon, affecting essential services such as airports, ports, water pumps, sewage systems, and prisons.
